Indian Civil Accounts Organisation Day

Today, March 1, is the Indian Civil Accounts Organisation Day.

I had no idea of what the Indian Civil Accounts Organisation Day was till five minutes ago, much less that it’s a day which is celebrated.

It turns out that it’s the day that the Departmentalisation of Union Accounts Act came into force in 1976. A press release from the Finance Ministry says that it is this Act which ‘led to the creation of Indian Civil Accounts Service which mans the Departmentalised accounting of the Civil Ministries in Government of India’.

Is it just me or does this seem like anything but cause for celebration? Commemoration, perhaps, but surely not celebration…
